Fire and smoke contamination

Contamination from a fire travels well beyond the burn zone: through the ventilation, along corridors and into rooms that look untouched. We find where it went, prove it with sampling, and clean and verify the building so it can be used again.

What you get

The full extent, on record

Contamination mapping beyond the visible damage, including the ventilation system and water left behind by firefighting.

A scope backed by results

Soot, particulate and surface sampling analysed by laboratories, so every line in the scope can be explained.

A building you can re-occupy

Cleaning and decontamination to the agreed scope, then a post-remediation assessment before handover.

How we handle it

  1. Assess

Initial site assessment, smoke and soot spread, firefighting water damage and the ventilation system.

  2. Test

Surface sampling, soot and particulate assessment and laboratory testing, with ventilation and HVAC investigation where smoke may have travelled.

  3. Control

Contamination zones established, with containment and HEPA-filtered extraction where the risk assessment calls for it.

  4. Remediate

Specialist cleaning and decontamination, coordinated with ventilation, electrical and construction specialists where the building needs them.

What lands in your file

Evidence an adjuster, an estates team or a health and safety committee can rely on.

  • Photographic condition survey
  • Contamination map
  • Sampling records and laboratory results
  • A written remediation scope
  • Waste documentation
  • Verification and handover records

Questions

Do you check the ventilation?

Yes. Smoke and soot move through air-handling systems, so ventilation and HVAC investigation is part of the assessment wherever it is relevant. On our laboratory case study, all ten air-handling units tested positive for soot.

Do you deal with water from firefighting?

Yes. It is assessed alongside the smoke damage and included in the drying and remediation plan.

Can unaffected parts of the building stay open?

Often, yes. Containment and controlled access keep the works separate from areas still in use.

Where do you work?

Cambridge, London and East Anglia.

After a fire

  • Keep people out of affected areas until they have been assessed
  • Leave soot-covered surfaces alone; wiping spreads it
  • Call us and we will tell you what to do next
